Fatal Four-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down I-81 North In Lebanon County: PennDOT

A fatal crash has led to the closure of a section of Interstate 81 in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler announced on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024.

The collision occurred at around 2:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Exit 80, Route 743/Grantville/Hershey, in East Hanover Township, according to PennDOT's 511PA. The crash involved two passenger vehicles and two tractor-trailers—one transporting beer and the other carrying fertilizer, Schreffler explained.

A coroner was called to the scene, with one fatality reported, according to Schreffler. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.

As of the latest update at 7:29 a.m., all lanes of Interstate 81 northbound remain closed between Exit 80 (Route 743/Grantville/Hershey) and Exit 85 (Fort Indiantown Gap). The crash reconstruction finished at 11:30 a.m. is finished and clean-up was completed by 11:50 a.m., Schreffler told us. 

The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the incident.
